Teacher: Zen Master Jok Um (Ken Kessel)
Description: Join us as we explore the concept of repentance presented in chapter six of Hui Neng's Platform Sutra, which is one of those rare pieces that contain the core of Zen teaching in a short space. Surprisingly, it begins with a look at what we recognize in the Kwan Um Zen tradition as the opening of the Homage to the Buddhas chant. Hui Neng then looks at repentance, the vows, the threefold refuge, the three bodies of the Buddha, and how to engage our karma. Following the flow of the text, in the first session, we'll look at how the sutra can be seen as a guide to practice, and in the second session, we will look at engaging the sutra to clarify our understanding of the teachings.
