Teacher: Colin Beavan JDPSN

Description: In this workshop, Colin Beavan JDPSN offers his personal reflections on the intersection of Zen-style freedom thinking, Hermetic Alchemy and Western New Thought—which emphasizes the power of thoughts to influence our reality. Contemporary Western rational thinking suggests that our world is changed by “doing things differently.” On the other hand, sutras of Mahayana Buddhism and writings in the New Thought movement suggest that the world is changed not by “doing things differently” but “viewing things differently.” For example, Mahayana teaches that if you see the world as Buddha, the world becomes Buddha. In this workshop, Colin will consider the definition of magic to be “accomplishing that which your current mindset believes to be impossible.” He will consider how Zen practice helps us to release our limited mindsets, perform “magic” and become more able to help our worlds and help each other. In addition to studying the references to magic in Zen Master Seung Sahn’s writings, the use of Kwan Seum Bosal and Thousand Eyes And Hands chanting, Colin will offer some personal “magical” practices he has developed to let go of limited thinking and become more helpful in his own life and the world.
