Korean Buddhist Art:
An Overview of Iconic Examples
That Influence Our Zen Tradition
An Overview of Iconic Examples
That Influence Our Zen Tradition

Teacher: Kathy Park JDPSN
Description: It is often understood that Zen focuses on the essence of meditation practice, often sparse in words and 'not depending on sutras.' However, the forms of Buddhist art over centuries in Korea have influenced how various teachings can be transmitted. We will explore iconic examples from the two thousand years of Korean Buddhist art which have moved people's hearts over centuries and continue to inspire us in our Zen practicing life.
Session One:
Monday, October 2 / 7PM Eastern
See this in your time zone
The first session will focus on early examples from the Three Kingdoms, Unified Shilla and the T'ang dynasty equivalent period in China. Examples of sculptures, paintings, architecture and ritual objects of these periods will be shared to familiarize us with the function of forms and the aesthetic essence of Korean Buddhist style and its influences.
Session Two:
Monday, October 23 / 7PM Eastern

The second session focuses on examples from the Koryo and Josun dynasties, and the evolution of forms to meet the changing societies and needs of modern times. We will also explore how altars can be created in our personal spaces or in Zen centers with guidelines and suggestions for best practices in our modern day environment.
